The Problem with Passion
Maybe one day I'll find it
Max sends out another clickbait title - oops. Sorry, it’s hard not to lol.
People always say, “Follow your passion and you will be happy.”
For a long time, I really wasn’t sure what my passions were. For some people, they come out of the womb knowing what it is while others discover it along the way. For me, I was kind of lost in the abyss of having too many hobbies, trying too many things and hoping that one sticks. Never really finding that one thing that really made me, me.
And then it dawned on me: Maybe I have too many?
And you could be thinking - Max, how is that an issue? So many people live life not truly knowing what their passions are, shouldn’t you be grateful?
Well, yes I am very grateful of course to be blessed with being such an interesing guy (lol). But it comes with one little fact: I’ll never be a specialist at any of them.
I’d love to surf everyday, walk through botanical gardens and learn about plants everyday, eat the best food I can find everyday, travel and experience different cultures and perspectives everyday, speak to business owners on how their models operate and learn about how they could be improved everyday….. (you get the idea).
But, i can’t. I’m just one Max.
This is my current dilemma. I know I want to take one or some of these passions and turn it into something useful (and brings me cash flow lol) but I don’t know where to begin. Which one do I pursue? Which has the best ROI? What if I fall out of love? What if you don’t really need passion to succeed, just determination?
It’s an impossible question to answer.
But maybe it’s not a bad thing to be a generalist. Maybe I can bridge perspectives. Maybe I can find analogous problems in completely different areas and solve them together. Maybe I can change the world?? (getting ahead of myself)
Maybe the key to happiness is not in following your passion, but in discovering more about yourself with each new thing you try. Maybe the key to happiness is more than just your passion, but about curiosity. Maybe I’m just a 23 year old kid who has no idea what he is talking about (highly likely).
Maybe one day I’ll find my one true passion but for now, I’m grateful for the 20 others that make me, me.
See you next week,
Max
What’s your passion? What really gets you giddy? What do you go to sleep thinking about? let me know :)
