The Twilight Weeks of Undergrad

what's next?

Well, we are almost there. After almost 5 years of school, 1 year fully online during COVID and 56 classes, I now have 6 weeks left in school.

It’s kind of bittersweet. My whole life, I have been a student. I’ve always known that I’ll have more classes to take, more assignments to do and more grades to receive. But after 6 weeks, there will be no more. No more group projects, presentations and no more finals to write.

Right now, the hardest part is the ‘twilight’ feeling. The feeling of being so close to being done, it can be hard to stay motivated with all those assignments, group projects and lectures. But also the feeling of wanting to savour the last few weeks of going to class, studying in the library, and hanging out with your friends when you should be doing something more productive. It’s a strange place to be in.

I think the strangest part is where all the people from my life are. Some of my friends have Masters degrees working in aerospace, some are working at their parent’s companies, some are just becoming medical doctors, some working multiple jobs and some are still figuring it out (I fall into this category). I’m pretty sure I’m the last from my high school cohort to graduate from University (oops).

Not to mention all the people we see on social media. There are so many ‘successful’ people who are younger than me and (seemingly) live amazing lives. It’s hard to not compare yourself. It’s hard to not think you ‘aren’t built for this’. While simultaneously, you know that you are. You know that your time is coming soon and you just need to push forward. You know that maybe your success is defined differently, you just need to put your head down and work.

I can’t quite express in words how strange the feeling of being in-between, and not quite knowing what’s next, really is. Not knowing what you’ll be doing, trying to find something that is both enjoyable, rewarding and financially feasible.

The twilight weeks are a weird place. Am I scared? A little. Excited? Of course. There is so much yet to come and so little time. But for now, I guess I should go to class.

See you next week,
Max
